Teen Turns to Reddit After Netflix May Have Outed Him to His Dad

Whoops.

There are so many ways to accidentally get outed to your parents these days, and one redditor has learned the hard way that even something as simple as watching Netflix with your pops could do the trick.

A 15-year-old turned to the r/askgaybros subreddit last week after finding himself uncertain whether Netflix may have just come out to his dad for him.

He and his dad sat down to look for a movie to watch, and the teen decided to look under his profile rather than his dad’s.

“And the first thing on continue watching was Elite,” he wrote. “If you know Netflix, they like to switch up the little posters about once every minute and this time they decided to put the one of the gay couple holding each other’s faces. I nearly got put in cardiac arrest.”

Hoping his father didn’t notice, the teen kept scrolling, but said his dad asked him what it was and told him to go back.

“I lowkey pretended that I didn’t know what he was talking about and kept looking,” he admitted.

The teen shared that his dad isn’t homophobic, and he’s seen him and his girlfriend watching Queer Eye before, but potentially being outed by Netflix when you’re least expecting it still isn’t a positive experience for anyone. And the redditor is worried his reaction to the gay poster popping up on screen may have just made the whole thing more suspicious.

“I know how feel,” one user commiserated. “When I showed my dad Netflix, he scrolled down to gay movies I used to watch. He didn’t say anything but either he doesn’t know yet or he doesn’t want to talk about it.”

“He may have an inkling of what you’re trying to hide from him and is seeking an opportunity to discuss it openly with you,” another suggested.

The original poster hasn’t been back to update the subreddit on his situation with his dad, but if Netflix didn’t accidentally out him, his story going viral very well may have by now.

Always clear your viewing history, kids!
