New tea about ‘The Idol’ has been spilled.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Destiny on The Idol, has revealed new information about the much-rumored second season renewal of the controversial HBO series.
Created by Sam Levinson, Abel Tesfaye (a.k.a. The Weeknd), and Reza Fahim, The Idol follows the character of Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) as she navigates the life of an up-and-coming popstar after recently losing her mother. Aside from Tesfaye making his acting debut as the character of Tedros, The Idol also features actors like Rachel Sennott (Leia), Troye Sivan (Xander), Suzanna Son (Chloe), Jane Adams (Nikki), Hari Nef (Talia), and Hank Azaria (Chaim), to name a few.
While the show was certainly not well-received by critics and social media fans, it does seem like HBO is still confident that The Idol can be renewed for a second season.

When rumors surfaced about The Idol being canceled, HBO flat-out denied it.
As a premium cable network, HBO is known for keeping a pretty low profile on social media. However, the channel did come out in defense of The Idol when rumors started coming to the surface that the series had already been canceled (and not renewed for a second season).
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined,” the official account for HBO PR tweeted on June 15. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
The Idol actress suggested that plans for season two are already being discussed.
In an interview with Variety, Randolph talked about how The Idol season one has been slowly setting things up for what’s to come in the next season. “A lot of subtleties have been put into place that if people go back once it ends and rewatch it, there have been many Easter eggs and some stuff put in there that sets things up for season two,” the actress revealed.
Tedros may or may not be back for the second season.
When specifically discussing whether or not Tedros would come back for season two of The Idol, Randolph had this to say about the season one finale: “It is definitely open where there could be a season two and have the Tedros character be in it.”
HBO is “quite happy” with plans for season two.
One last drop of tea spilled by Randolph in this interview suggested that HBO is very keen on renewing The Idol for a new season. “I think that everyone’s intention is to have a second season,” the actress explained. “This was never intended to be a limited series. HBO has been very happy with it.”
She added, “Nothing is official, but HBO is quite happy.”
