One and done.
HBO’s latest series from Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye will not be renewed for a second season.
In a statement obtained from Variety, a spokesperson for the network said, "The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
Although rumors were swirling that a second season may be on the horizon,The Idol had a hard time resonating with viewers.
Plus, a ton of drama behind-the-scenes including director Amy Seimetz's departure from the series as it neared completion, along with a shocking Rolling Stone report that detailed upsetting allegations about a toxic work environment, ultimately didn't help the show's reputation.
To add insult to injury, the show was poorly received by critics (with only a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and the season lost viewers as new episodes dropped.
It looks like many people didn't idolize what this show had to offer.
