Tegan & Sara's 'Everything Is Awesome' Oscar-Nominated

The Lego Movie may not have scored an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film, but we think it’s pretty awesome that the song Tegan and Sara performed in the movie, “Everything Is Awesome,” got nominated for Best Original Song.

The “insanely upbeat track” is a bit of an anomaly for the lesbian twin-sister duo, known for their “nuanced indie-pop catalogue,” Billboard notes. That, however, is what attracted them to it, Sara Quin told the publication when the song hit the charts last year.

“We want to be a ‘serious’ musical band, while also being funny people,” she said. “But this was so adorable, and the movie looked great, and the opportunity to do something with Mark Mothersbaugh and the Lonely Island [which performed with the sisters] ... it was sort of a no-brainer, and it’s turned out to be this really cool moment. We feel like it was a win-win.”

Mothersbaugh, known for his work with Devo, coproduced the tune with songwriter Shawn Patterson, and being the writer, Patterson is the Oscar nominee, not the Quin sisters. But we’re still glad to see them play a role. No word on if they’ll perform the song at the ceremony February 22 — Oscar producers are notorious for not going with original artists — but we can report that they’re working on a follow-up to their most recent album, Heartthrob. And on their website, the sisters wrote that they couldn't be more proud to be a part of “Everything Is Awesome.”

“This was the first time we contributed to a track that was specifically written for a film, and it’s been a real thrill to watch it become such a popular song with people of all ages!” they wrote. “On our tour dates last fall with Katy Perry we performed a version of it, and the venues would light up as kids and their parents recognized the song and all chimed in on the chorus. We felt like we were part of something really special.” They also congratulated their collaborators.
