While most of us were waiting for the weekend to start, gay loving gal Kathy Griffin got a very public poolside Pap smear.
Griffin had a Pap smear poolside at the Palomar Hotel in Los Angeles Friday -- which we assume is the first of its kind on TV.
Griffin, 49, candidly outdid Katie Couric's celebrity colonoscopy when she got an on-air Pap smear for her cable series My Life on the D-List to raise awareness about cervical cancer.
To view Couric's colonoscopy, you had to watch it on NBC's The Today Show. But Griffin's Pap smear could be seen by all poolside partiers and hotel dwellers. Those of you who missed the uncomfortable moment can see it when her series returns to Bravo.
"Kathy feels that this cause is so important that she has bedazzled her [private parts] so it can be as 'va-beautiful' as it 'va-can' " a news release said.
"We tried to do it in a somewhat classy fashion," Griffin told E!"The Today show wouldn't let us do it, not Good Morning America-no legitimate news place would let us do it in an even somewhat serious way. So I said, 'Screw it!' They can't stop me from doing a Pap smear on my own show."
Why would Griffin want to share something so downright personal? Because she wants to say "Suck it to Cancer" and educate women around the world about health and cancer awareness.
"I started talking to girlfriends of mine, my age and younger, and I just can't believe how many women are afraid to get a Pap smear or they forget or they've gone 10 years without doing one," she said. "The message is, if you see me doing something so outrageous-some may say repulsive-that should make it easier for you to pick up the phone and call your doctor and go get one in the privacy of your own doctor's office."
And don't worry because Griffin's poolside procedure was conducted by an actual medical physician.
