For the second time this year, the House passed a bill on Wednesday that would allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military by repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Supporters of the bill in the Senate say that there might not be enough time to get the bill through before the end of the lame duck session.
Megan McCain voiced her support for the stand-alone DADT repeal bill on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, and also said that she thinks her father, Sen. John McCain, will filibuster. However, she thinks the new bill to repeal DADT will get enough votes to overcome a filibuster expected from her father, Sen. John McCain.
Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman feels good about the vote, noting that 57 of 58 democrats support the bill, and at least four republicans are also in favor of it. Republican Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Scott Brown and Olympia Snowe have all said they will vote for a stand-alone DADT repeal bill. With these four republican votes, the senate has 61 votes, meeting the required 60 votes to stop a filibuster.
In order to get the bill passed this lame duck session, Sen. Lieberman says that it must be made a priority. "Its an injustice, its un-American to tell people who want to serve our country, put their lives on the line for our country - we need them in the military - to tell them 'No, you can't do it because you're gay or lesbian.' Its not the American way."
Sen. Lieberman feels that in order to make sure DADT is repealed, it should be put before the START treaty that also needs to be done before the close of the session. He fears that if the repeal bill is not passed this year, there will not be enough votes to get it passed next year.
