Peace Activist Cindy Sheehan Says DADT Repeal Is A Step Backward

Peace activist Cindy Sheehan writes that the allowing gay people to serve openly is not a true human rights advance, given the reality of the U.S. military, “one of the least socially responsible organizations that exists on earth.”

Sheehan articulated her position in an op-ed last month for Al Jazeera, where she advised, “Don’t go, don’t kill!”

“I can see how one could view the repeal as a step forward, framed in the context dictated by the political elites of the Washington beltway,” she wrote. “I can imagine much displeasure amongst the military brass — but I cannot reiterate enough how this is not a progressive moment in the social history of the United States.”

Sheehan came to prominence for her antiwar activism after her son, Spec. Casey A. Sheehan, was killed in Iraq in 2004. She unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2008.

“I want to bang my head against a wall when another young gay person commits suicide as a result despicable bullying, yet people within the same community have fought hard for the right to openly join the biggest bully ever!” she continued.
