Equal rights activist Charlene Strong has been named the new Co-Editor of The Seattle Lesbian, Seattle’s only lesbian-focused lifestyle and entertainment online news magazine, according to a press release.

Strong become a tireless advocate for equality after the tragic death of her partner when she was forced to seek permission from her dying partner’s out-of-state relative to be by her loved one’s side in the hospital. Only a month later Strong testified before the Washington state legislature, and her testimony was critical in helping to pass landmark domestic partnership legislation in Washington State.

Strong’s story and her fight for family rights were paramount in winning a critical campaign in her home state during an attempt to repeal the domestic partnership laws that were put in place by state legislators. Since then Strong has traveled the United States spreading a message that is opening hearts and minds about the collateral damage of inequality many LGBT families continue to endure in this country.”

In 2007, Strong was appointed to be a Commissioner of Human Rights for the state of Washington. Her fight for equality and speaking on behalf of all families has brought her to the White House to meet with President Barack Obama, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelious and the president of the SEIU, the largest nurses’ union in the nation.

Strong has since turned her activism into art with her award-winning documentary “for my wife…,” chronicling the making of an activist, and her work was featured in the USA channel documentary Bridging the Divide, with Tom Brokaw.

Now Strong adds her work with the The Seattle Lesbian to her impressive list of endeavors. The Seattle Lesbian launched with Editor-in-Chief Sarah Toce at the helm in the fall of 2010 and was honored by Gay City Health Project in February 2011 for working to bridge the gap between the gay and lesbian communities. Toce and Strong will continue to work together to bring breaking news to the LGBT community both locally and nationally.
