Rebel Wilson is opening up about being forced to come out publicly before she was ready, and unsurprisingly, she doesn’t have anything nice to say.

In case you’ve forgotten, the Pitch Perfect star shared her relationship status back in June, acknowledging that she “thought [she] was searching for a Disney Prince” when she instead fell in love with Ramona Agruma.

Sydney Morning Herald columnist Andrew Hornery then publicly complained that Wilson had only outed herself because he had threatened to out her himself, offering her the courtesy of giving the paper a quote ahead of time.

“I just thought it was kind of grubby behavior,” she toldThe Australian Thursday. “Basically, with the situation where a journalist is threatening to out you, you’ve got to hurry, and some people we didn’t get a chance to tell before it came out publicly. And that’s not ideal.”

Wilson had largely remained mum on the subject prior to this, only tweeting that “it was a very hard situation” after Hornery’s article dragging her for not allowing them the exclusive came out.

The situation sparked some debate over whether it was acceptable to report on speculated same-sex relationships the same way a tabloid might report on speculated heteronormative relationships, or whether outing someone was still as cruel as it was decades ago. Across the conversation, however, was a general frustration with how Hornery handled the situation and the position Wilson had been put into because of it.

And her now sharing with The Australian that she and Agruma were out to some of their friends and family – but hadn’t told everyone in their lives yet – is serving as a harsh reminder that coming out is still a difficult and personal thing, especially as a public figure in the age of social media. One of Hornery’s complaints at the time was that Wilson had previously used social media to “brag about her handsome ex-boyfriend,” but she couldn’t have known she would end up falling for a woman and have to figure out all over again how to be true to herself and deal with possibly unaccepting family or friends.

“There are levels to telling people,” she said. “You tell your close family and your friends and not everybody. Across our two families, not everybody is as accepting as what you’d hope for, and we were trying to be respectful to those people and tell them in our own way.”

Now, rumors of a potential engagement are following Wilson and Agruma around, thanks to a diamond ring spotted on the former’s hand. But for now, that’s something the actress is keeping quiet about, and it’s hard to blame her for it.
