Ten queer people meet, mingle, and soul-search to decide if they should marry their partner or break up forever.

It’s now or never for the LGBTQ+ couples featured in the upcoming season of Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love. No surprise, it’s giving gay chaos.

The Ultimatum universe is expanding to showcase more stories of love, relationships, and the ups and the downs of commitment,” reads Netflix’s official synopsis. “In The Ultimatum: Queer Love, five new couples, made up of women and non-binary people, are at a crossroads in their relationship. One partner is ready for marriage, the other may have doubts. An ultimatum is issued. And in just over eight weeks, each couple will either get married or get out, after they each choose new potential partners in a life-changing opportunity to get a glimpse of two different futures.”

The series, which comes from the creator of the streamer’s hit series Love Is Blind, offers couples who are at an inflection point in their relationship the choice between committing to one another or going their separate ways. As if that weren’t complicated enough, a variety of other people, many of whom they are compatible with, are in the house as well, to see if perhaps there isn’t someone else out there they’re more suited for.

Naturally, emotions run high. “I don’t even want to say her name anymore, she’s like Voldemort to me,” says one cast member as the teaser trailer kicks off. Another cast member teases pet-related drama, saying “If you don’t like my dog, you can get the f— out.”

No doubt some, if not many, of the castmates are about to experience real heartbreak. “Sometimes love is not enough,” says a castmate as the trailer ends.

The Ultimatum creator Chris Coelen previously teased the dramatic season to Variety in July. “It’s really exciting. I am deep, deep into post [production] on the show now, and it’s great,” he shared.

“What’s fascinating is when you actually look at the reasons that people give for not being ready, there are a multitude of reasons: ‘I come from a family background of bad relationships. I don’t want to repeat my past’ or ‘I’m not ready, I’m too young’ or ‘I need to be financially stable,’” he explained. “There may be some validity to some of those reasons, but the real reason is that they’re not sure that they want to marry this person that they’re with. Most of those things that they say are our excuses, and it’s very common.”

In the immortal words of Mama Ru, “I can’t wait to see how this turns out.”

The Ultimatum: Queer Love premieres with episodes 1-4 on Netflix on May 24, 2023, releasing batches of four episodes on the following two Wednesdays. Watch the trailer and check out the first-look images below.
