The holiday season is in full swing and one of the best parts of this time of year is cozying up with a good old-fashioned (but thankfully not too old-fashioned) holiday film like Netflix’s adorable and hilarious Falling for Christmas.

The film sees Lindsay Lohan starring as Sierra Belmont, a spoiled, newly engaged heiress who, after a skiing accident, develops total amnesia. However, a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner (Chord Overstreet) and his precocious daughter take her into their care, just in time for Christmas. And, of course, romance is soon in the air. It’s adorable and, without getting into spoiler territory, queer-inclusive.

PRIDE had the opportunity to sit down with stars Lohan and Overstreet to talk about creating the music for the film, and the importance of queer representation in films.

“It was exciting, but definitely a little nerve-wracking,” Lohan tells PRIDE about what it felt like to homage Mean Girls with some of the film’s musical moments. “I wanted to make everyone happy. I wanted it to be as good as it was in Mean Girls, music-wise. It was a thing to do it. I was hesitant at first but then I just had to fully commit.”

Falling for Christmas allowed actor and musician Overstreet to create his first-ever holiday music. “It was different. It was fun. I had never written an original Christmas song,” he tells PRIDE. “But it was really fun. I’ve grown up loving Christmas music, so it was a blast. I did it in February, so I went from filming October to December and then going into Christmas and I carried Christmas out till February. So I had a good like five months of Christmas.”

While Lohan and Overstreet’s characters may be on a hilarious crash course toward love, they aren’t the only ones to find romance in unexpected places. There’s a surprise queer love story that pops up in the film as well. This is the kind of representation that Lohan is excited to have seen become a part of the movie. “I think it’s beautiful. I think it’s so refreshing,” she says. “I mean, we’re finally seeing it more in rom-coms now and I hope we start to see a lot more of it. And I think it’s a beautiful thing. We’re all kind of growing together. It’s about time.”

Overstreet agreed. “I don’t think I could add anything better to that than how she said it,” he concludes.
