Jake Gyllenhaal to Produce and Star in Fun Home Film Adaptation
Fan-favorite Broadway musical Fun Home is being adapted as a movie — and Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly on board to play one of the main gay characters.
Not too much is known about the planned adaptation just yet, only that the rights have been optioned by Gyllenhaal’s production company, Nine Stories, with his business partner Riva Marker working on development and Sam Gold, who directed the stage version, will return to direct.
Broadway’s Fun Home is already adapted from Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel memoir of the same name. The story follows Bechdel’s journey to discovering her own sexuality as a lesbian while reminiscing on her relationship growing up with her father, who was also gay and ultimately committed suicide.
Gyllenhaal is slated to play Alison’s father, Bruce Bechdel.
It obviously won’t be the actor’s first time jumping into a queer role. Not a soul among us doesn’t remember Brokeback Mountain, and more recently, he took a turn as the sexually fluid Morf Vandewalt in Velvet Buzzsaw.
Gyllenhaal is also no stranger to musicals, having appeared in Sunday in the Park With George and Little Shop of Horrors.
Fun Home is expected to begin production either later this year or early 2021.
Rachel Kiley is presumably a writer and definitely not a terminator. She can usually be found crying over queerbaiting in the Pitch Perfect franchise or on Twitter, if not both.
