How will this stack up against the original?

The first trailer from the upcoming reimagining of Hellraiser is here, and already looks to be a brilliant new entry into the chilling franchise.

The 1987 Hellraiser, written and directed by Clive Barker, featured the terrifying Pinhead as the leader of a group of demonic beings (Cenobites) intent on the sadistic torture of human souls. It spawned nine disturbing sequels over the years, and has been hailed as queer culture despite not necessarily being explicitly queer.

“Sex is a great leveller,” Barker said. “It made me want to tell a story about good and evil in which sexuality was the connective tissue… Hellraiser, the story of a man driven to seek the ultimate sensual experience, has a much more twisted sense of sexuality.”

This reboot is slated to focus on Odessa A’zion’s Riley, who is struggling with addiction when she comes across the puzzle box capable of summoning Cenobites to earth. It reportedly goes back to the source material — Barker’s own novella, The Hellbound Heart — to start the franchise new again.

Particularly of note in this adaptation is the decision to have Pinhead played by a woman, Jamie Clayton.

“Jamie was just the right person for the role,” director David Bruckner previously told EW.”A person’s identity can be really exciting for a role in many ways, but I have to emphasize that Jamie absolutely killed, that’s how we got there.”

Hellraiser will drop directly on Hulu October 7 — just in time for pre-Halloween viewing while also providing plenty of time to catch up on the original nine films first.
