Sarah McBride, the former national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, just made history as the first out transgender state senator in the U.S.!

A Democrat, Sarah beat Republican Steve Washington in Delaware’s senate race, making her the highest-ranking out transgender lawmaker in the nation, with state Senates being the upper legislative house, our sister site The Advocate reports

"I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too," Sarah tweeted shortly after the news of her victory.

"Congratulations to our very own @SarahEMcBrideon becoming the first openly transgender state senator nationwide and first trans member of Delaware's Legislature!" the HRC tweeted. "We're so proud of you for this historic win."
