If you thought Anthony Scaramucci had an embarrassing run under President Donald Trump's leadership, he has nothing on Katie Zacharia.
Scaramucci may have only served an 11-day stint as the White House Communications Director in 2017, but Zacharia beat that record as President Trump's press secretary. She was fired after just five days of her job, most of which were mired in controversy.
According to a report by The New York Times, Trump let Zacharia go on Friday, October 16, after only starting her new job on Monday.
While her rocky, 14-minute debut briefing raised immediate eyebrows, things quickly devolved. Her tenure came to a sudden halt after The Wall Street Journal revealed she had practiced law for years without actually passing the bar exam.
After her first press briefing on Tuesday, journalists questioned Zacharia’s pedigree as a lawyer after learning she had failed the California bar exam. Zacharia later told Real America’s Voice host Jack Posobiec in an interview on October 15 that she had been advised to call herself a “lawyer” but “not an attorney at law.”
This hair-splitting answer didn’t go over well with Sean Hannity, who pressed Zacharia about her legal background and got her to admit she failed the bar exam and never retook it.
Her defense when she went back on Fox on Friday? “I’m being hired as White House press secretary and not White House counsel,” she said.
Just hours after her Fox & Friends appearance, Trump encouraged her to quit, and The New York Times then reported she had been fired.
Since the news broke, the internet has relentlessly roasted the now-former press secretary. People on social media are calling her five-day stint in the position “one half a Scaramucci” and joking that at least she has her career as an attorney to fall back on. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office even posted a memorial for her short-lived career.
Scaramucci got in on the zingers too, comparing Zacharia’s tenure to the lifespan of a head of lettuce, in reference to a 2022 internet challenge tested the theory that former British Prime Minister Liz Truss left office so quickly that a head of lettuce wouldn’t have time to wilt.
