Golden Globes Nominations Out: Milk Gets Snubbed

The Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday morning with Milk practically shut out, save for a nod to its star Sean Penn for Best Actor, but Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet received plenty of love from the Hollywood Foreign Press with two nominations each.

The biopic Milk, about slain gay activist Harvey Milk has garnered critical raves, buy didn't land a nod, nor did its director Gus van Sant. Rather, for Best Motion Picture (Drama) the Hollywood Foreign Press nominated The Reader, Frost / Nixon, Revolutionary Road, Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Mamma Mia, Burn After Reading, Happy Go Lucky, In Bruges and Vicky Cristina Barcelona are in the running for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical).

Meryl Streep landed acting nominations for Best Actress in a Drama for Doubt and for Best Actress in a Comedy / Musical for Mamma Mia while Kate Winslet pulled in two nods with one for Best Actress in Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress in The Reader.

Those two heavy hitters will face off in the drama category against Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married,Angelina Jolie for The Changeling and Kristin Scott Thomas for I’ve Loved You so Long.

In the Best Actor Drama category Sean Penn is nominated along with Brad Pitt for the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frank Langella for Frost / Nixon, Leonardo Dicaprio for Revolutionary Road and Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler.

A Best Supporting nomination went to Penelope Cruz who played bisexual in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Javier Bardem also landed a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for that film.

While the Dark Knight failed to garner much attention from the Globes, Heath Ledger earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his inspired portrayal of the Joker.

In the television categories, cable led the charge in the Best Television Series Drama category with nominations for Mad Men, True Blood, Dexter and In Treatment. Only Fox’s House scored a nomination for the networks.

The Networks faired slightly better in the Best Television Series Comedy category with NBC’s 30 Rock and The Office landing nominations but Showtime and HBO shows Weeds, Californication and Entourage rounded out the category.
