Shot of the Day: t.a.T.u, Russian Pop Duo Famous for Lesbian Imagery, Plays Sochi Opening Ceremony

The Russian pop duo t.a.T.u played the Olympics opening ceremony pre-show.

Earlier this week we mentioned that Russian pop duo t.a.T.u, the group that made quite a splash in the early aughts by donning schoolgirl uniforms and invoking lesbian imagery, would play at the Sochi opening ceremony pre-show, an interesting choice considering Russia’s Gay Propaganda ban. There was a time when t.a.T.u made a living from playing at being lesbian.

For the Olympics pre-show t.a.T.u’s Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova left the short plaid skirt and ties behind in favor of slightly more conservative but equally fetching costumes to perform their hits “All the Things She Said” and “Not Gonna Get Us.” While they have moved on from making with each other, as in the video for “All the Things…” and the MTV Movie Award performance for “Not Gonna Get Us," Katina and Yulia were characteristically close for the performance.

Here’s t.a.T.u at the ceremony!
