Falsettos is officially back on Broadway, and it couldn't be in better hands. Andrew Rannells, star of HBO's Girls and literal Broadway royalty (he recently played King George in Hamilton), is part of the stellar ensemble of the multi-part musical along with a cast of all-stars who are bringing the tale of love and loss before and during the AIDS crisis to life. This is quite a different turn from the star, who you may remember once won a Tony for his role in Book of Mormon.

Falsettos may certainly utilize Rannell's comedic charm, but it's also likely to truly tear at our heartstrings. Falsettos, from William Finn (book, music, and lyrics) and James Lapine (book and direction), is comprised of what were originally two different shows, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland, which feature a timeline spanning 1979 - 1981. While the shows may only take place over three years, the history between them - and the differentiating tone of the two acts - is immense. The first act deals with Marvin, a family man who's left his wife for a male partner Whizzer, as he struggles to forge ahead with his ex-wife and young son in his life. It's a lighter act, famously kicked off with the song "Four Jews in a Room Bitching," to give you a hint of tone. The second takes a darker turn, as the characters' lives become personally affected by AIDS. Falsettos certainly creates a unique musical take on our history, and it'll definitely be an hard-hitting one.

Andrew Rannells stars as Whizzer, and Something Rotten's sexy Shakespeare, Christian Borle, plays Marvin. The cast also includes Stephanie J. Block (who played Liza Minelli in Hugh Jackman's The Boy From Oz), and Tracie Thoms and Betsy Wolfe as "The Lesbians Next Door." We're pretty sure a stronger cast couldn't possibly be compiled. Or hey, a hotter one, for that matter.

For those who are familiar with Falsettos, we certainly know we'll want to prepare ourselves emotionally. For those who aren't, we're glad to see this important, historical musical with major LGBT themes returning to Broadway for the first time since 1992. Falsettos will officially open at the Walter Kerr Theater on October 27th, and you can purchase tickets here.
