'My Little Pony' Introduces a Same-Sex Couple in New Episode

What a great time to be a cartoon fan.

Move over Arthur, a new cartoon has debuted a same-sex couple!

(Totally kidding, there is room for so many same-sex couples in all cartoons/media, this is not a competition!!)

The remarkably popular My Little Pony franchise has upped their inclusivity by introducing a same-sex couple in an upcoming episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

ComicsBeat reports that the episode, “The Last Crusade,” has already aired overseas, and will hit American stations this Saturday. The story features pegasus pony Scootaloo and her friends meeting up with her guardians, Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty.

And no, these aunts are not sisters. They were actually previously introduced in the book Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe back in 2017, prompting one of the book’s writers, Michael Vogel, who also writes for the show, to confirm the relationship on Twitter at the time.

But “The Last Crusade” will mark the first appearance of Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty in the actual television show, and just in time, too — this is the long-running series’ ninth and final season.

Vogel celebrated the milestone on Twitter this time around, too, tweeting that he, Josh Haber, and Nicole Dubuc (the episode’s writer) are “doin’ what we can to bring EQuality to EQuestrial!!”

It’s unclear as of yet if we’ll see anymore of these aunties in the remaining episodes as Friendship is Magic finishes out its run, but the casual inclusion is incredibly important to kids of same-sex parents who haven’t seen themselves reflected in the shows they watch anywhere near as often as they should.
