Bold move for a masked hero.

Kate Kane may have been living her life as an out and proud woman on The CW’s Batwoman, but her alter ego remained in the closet as far as the people of Gotham were aware. But that is no longer the case. In the most recent episode, Batwoman came out as a lesbian.

Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl, got the exclusive scoop, publishing an interview with Batwoman in Catco magazine.

Kane made the decision to out her alter ego after rumors spread that she was dating a male cop, Slam Bradley, and wanting to set the record straight, so to speak. Hearing about a queer teen, Parker Torres, who was outed to her family by an ex-girlfriend and whose parents didn’t take it well also moved the hero to stand up and be a role model for the queer community of Gotham.

And Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries says it was easy to find the inspiration for that storyline.

“With Parker, the girl who pushes Kate to have Batwoman come out, I used my wife’s coming out story,” Dries told The Hollywood Reporter. “A girl she was dating in high school got mad at her and called her mom and outed her.”

“I felt like that was very relatable. It’s the idea of somebody who is not ready to come out yet, being weaponized against them.”

With so much of season one remaining, and with Batwoman already picked up for a season two, it should be interesting to see how the whole of Gotham reacts to having a lesbian superhero out there fighting crime and saving their lives. And it will certainly be more of a challenge for Kate Kane to maintain her secret identity now that everyone knows whoever hides behind the mask is gay. It certainly narrows things down…but like all superheroes in comics, we’re sure she’ll find a way to stay hidden.
