Halsey Stuns NYC Women's March With Powerful Poem About Abuse

The bisexual singer shared her experiences in the poem "A Story Like Mine" and called for her audience to take a stand.

Bisexual singer Halsey delivered a stunningly moving poem about sexual violence at the Women’s March in New York City Saturday.

“I don’ really know how to do a speech unless it rhymes, so I’m gonna do a little poem for you guys,” she said before launching into “A Story Like Mine.”

The poem told her story of being sexually assaulted when she was a child; of going to Planned Parenthood with her best friend after the friend of raped; and of dealing with a boyfriend who claimed she owed him sex.

“It's 2018 and I've realized nobody is safe long as she is alive / And every friend that I know has a story like mine,” Halsey recited later in the poem. She called out Donald Trump – “Not one word from the man who is president” – and pleaded with her audience to listen to the stories of all, “black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian.”

She concluded with a call to action:  “There is work to be done / There are songs to be sung / Lord knows there's a war to be won.” Watch her recite the full poem below.
