The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will include a new category for Best Video With A Message, following the outpouring of artists mobilizing to support bullied youth, reject LGBT discrimination and emphasize self worth. The nominees are Pink for "Fuckin' Perfect," Lady Gaga for "Born This Way," Katy Perry for "Firework," Eminem featuring Rihanna for "Love The Way You Lie," Rise Against for "Make It Stop (September's Children)" and Taylor Swift for "Mean."

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will include a new category for Best Video With A Message. The new award is in conjunction with MTV Act, which celebrates the union between music and social activism, and two gay anthems and a female empowerment anthem courtesy of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and P!nk are nominated.

This special category celebrates the powerful intersection of music and social activism, and highlights artists who created music videos with positive messages of self-empowerment or raised awareness of key social issues facing today’s youth.  With an outpouring of support from across the pop culture spectrum the last year, artists mobilized to support bullied youth, reject LGBT discrimination and emphasize self worth.

MTV President Stephen Friedman explained, "During the past year, we've seen a remarkable number of artists use their music to explore deeply personal experiences and issues they were passionate about to create powerful videos that resonated with and inspired millions of their fans."

The first-ever nominees for Best Video With A Message are Pink for "Fuckin' Perfect," Lady Gaga for "Born This Way," Katy Perry for "Firework," Eminem featuring Rihanna for "Love The Way You Lie," Rise Against for "Make It Stop (September's Children)" and Taylor Swift for "Mean."

Viewers can vote for their favorite in this category here (or here for mobile) now through August 16th. The 2011 Video Music Awards will air live from Nokia Theater L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 28th at 9:00 PM (Live ET/Tape delayed PT).
