Get to know the singer who swears, "Women throw their underwear at me, and I encourage it!”

Lesbian UK site When Sally Met Sally recently chatted up the performer, whose loud “yelling” style of singing and tin foil nipple-covered costumes are onstage signatures, and got some insight into her thoughts on the gay music scene and performing for lesbian crowds.

Read some excerpts from 29-year-old Vinyl Black Stilettos lead singer Laura D.’s interview below:

[Laura D.] started the band in 2009 as a “project” – as she calls it – to fill the live lesbian music scene with something a bit different.

“I was sick of f**king acoustic lesbian music… I hate so much lesbian music and I wanted to introduce a new electro-punk sound to the lesbian scene.”

Back in the summer, they went down a storm at lesbian camping festival GOGO Festival where they got their reputation for outrageous costumes and yell-a-long fun.

“I’m not claiming to be a singer you know, I just yell into the microphone, I’m more of a performer!” she comments, but in fact Laura is in charge, writing and producing all her own music as well as managing the band.

The focus on the lesbian audience has allowed the band to develop but as Laura is now eying up the mainstream market. “Our first EP was very much aimed at the lesbian audience but the new album we are working on will have a broader appeal.” Lyrically Laura is proud of the common themes of her songs – singing about hooking up with girls gives her music a fresh playfulness and there is certainly no danger of her hiding this.

Yet she recognizes that she may need to adapt a bit for the mainstream.

“Yeah, I am still going to sing about Your Virgina,” [a reference to the original title of her first EP]“I love the idea of someone asking for “Your Virgina” in a record store....but you know, I am not sure mainstream radio stations will play a song called that, so we changed the title to ‘You Want Her, You Love Her’ instead..” she says, with a playful laugh. (Listen to “You Want Her, You Love Her” below)

…How she feels about her burgeoning sex symbol status, “Women throw their underwear at me, and I encourage it… I do have a few Facebook stalkers,” she laughs. “I am single! Ladies, you have to have very sexy underwear!”

Completing the new album is the next big focus (expected some time in the new year), as well as touring. She is also excited about playing at L-Beach – a mighty European beach side lesbian music and lifestyle festival weekend in Hamburg in April 2012. Tickets (along with great deals on flights) can be grabbed at a bargain if you are prepared to book early on L-beach.com.

Coming up a little sooner than this is a turn at Bank Holiday regular lesbian night 100% Babe on Saturday 24th September at Centro, 18 West Central Street in Soho.
