GLAAD Nominates 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Pretty Little Liars,' 'Pariah, 'The Real L Word' and More

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced the nominees for the 23rd annual GLAAD media awards Thursday and a host of lesbian-themed shows and movies landed nods. Including Grey's Anatomy with Callie and Arizona, Pretty Little Liars with Emily and Glee with Santana and Brittany.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced the nominees for the 23rd annual GLAAD media awards Thursday and a host of lesbian-themed shows and movies landed nods.

Among the women-oriented films nominated Glenn Close’s passion project Albert Nobbs, in which Close and costar Janet McTeer play women passing as men in a dire 19th century Britain, landed a spot in the Outstanding Film – Wide Release category. Albert Nobbs is nominated with Beginners and J. Edgar.

Dee Rees acclaimed Pariah, about a young girl coming out in Brooklyn in a homophobic household; Circumstance, about two women who fall in love against their culture’s proscriptions in Iran; and Tomboy, the French film about a young girl who creates a male identity for herself when she moves to a new town, dominate the field for Outstanding Film – Limited Release.

For its thoughtful telling of Callie and Arizona’s travails and subsequent wedding last season Grey’s Anatomy landed a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series category, along with Pretty Little Liars with its careful depiction of a teen lesbian  coming out amidst a crazy mystery story.

The Outstanding Comedy Series category features Glee, with it’s lesbian, gay and bisexual characters including the lesbian cheerleader Santana. Michelle Paradise’s lesbian-themed sitcom Exes and Ohs, about a group of friends living in Seattle also landed a nod.

The Real L Word and The Voice, for which out lesbians Vicci Martinez and Beverly McClellan made it to the finals, landed nods in the Outstanding Reality Series category.
