Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels star and all-around bad-ass Lucy Liu has been tapped to play Dr. Watson opposite Johnny Lee Miller in the CBS pilot Elementary, a reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved Sherlock Holmes detective tales, according to Deadline.
Among the changes to the Sherlock Holmes narrative is CBS choice to make Holmes’ right-hand man Watson a woman, and who better to step into the role than Ally McBeal alumna Lucy Liu? The pilot also repositions Holmes and Watson in the Unites States rather than in Britain.
Elementary imagines Holmes (Miller) as a former Scotland Yard consultant fresh out of rehab and living in New York City. The drug addiction angle is culled straight from Conan Doyle whose Holmes occasionally used cocaine as a stimulant to help him work.
Liu who’s recently had a season arc on the cop show Southland plays Joan Watson, Holmes’ “sober companion” and apparently roomie, who is a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died.
