Out actress Sara Gilbert weighed in on former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron’s hateful antigay remarks on The Talk Monday.
Last week Christian idealogue Cameron used his appearance on Piers Morgan’s talk show to discuss his antigay views calling homosexuality, "unnatural... detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization." He then assailed same-sex marriage saying, "Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either."
Former Rosanne star Gilbert and the women of The Talk, including guest LaToya Jackson, took up the discussion regarding Cameron’s remarks, which have set off a firestorm of mostly pro-gay response on the Internet and in the Twitterverse.
“The tragedy of this is that Growing Pains will never be the same to me,” Gilbert said semi-jokingly before becoming deadly serious.
“He’s entitled to his opinion but you really have to think about who you’re hurting…the kids out there who aren’t okay with who they are,” Gilbert said. “In lesbian, gay and transgender youth, the suicide attempt rate is 30 to 40 percent, and those kids hearing that message….He just needs to think about that. And when he’s saying we’re taking apart foundations in society, I would argue that there is no one who fights for marriage more than gay people.”
