HBO's 'Girls' Offers a Sex and the City for the Mumblecore Set

Lena Dunham’s Girls, executive produced by Hollywood golden boy Judd Apatow, premieres on HBO this Sunday, and beginning the following day non-subscribers can view the series on any number of online outlets including, YouTube and Daily Motion, HBO announced earlier this week, according to The Huffington Post.

Girls, a sort of Sex and the City for the Mumblecore set, creator and costar Dunham, who made a splash on the indie film scene with 2010’s Tiny Furniture, says that comparisons to Carrie Bradshaw and the girls are inevitable as the foursome of Girls grew up on the HBO hit.

“It’s four women, it’s New York City, and not only could our show not exist without Sex and the City and what it did for women and television, these characters wouldn’t exist without Sex and the City, because these are girls who watched that show and moved to New York because of it,” Dunham says of her gang of four who are trying to make it in Brooklyn at that transitional time around college graduation.

The women of Girls consists of Dunham as darkly self-effacing Hannah; Zoisa Mamet -- who played a beatniky cool lesbian on Mad Men -- as Sex and the City aficionado and virgin Shoshanna; Allison Williams’ as the tightly wound pretty girl Marnie; and Jemima Kirke, who starred in Tiny Furniture, as the girl from across the pond Jessa.

While a chunk of Girls revolves around issues with boys AfterEllen’s Trish Bendix did report from South by Southwest that Dunham said there’s a lesbian story arc toward the end of the first season that could become a larger story in a season two, which is one great reason to start watching!

Meanwhile, check out the trailer for Girls, and remember, if you don’t have HBO you can watch it online beginning April 16. The bad part about that is the episodes will only be posted online through May 14.
