While there’s nothing terribly lesbian about the announcement that Minnie Driver has signed on to costar in Stage Fright, a musical / horror hybrid about a deranged killer who loathes showtunes and stalks a musical theater camp, it sure is campy as hell!
Driver, a singer / songwriter who also appeared in the big screen flop Phantom of the Opera (which some musical theater nerds – like me - actually enjoyed) will play Kylie Swanson an “enigmatic and haunted star of the Broadway stage” and the mother of siblings played by Allie McDonald and Douglas Smith, who are at the apex of the killer’s musical theater rage, according to Deadline.
A sort of Camp meets Friday the 13th,Stage Fright also stars Meat Loaf Aday (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) as an ousted Broadway producer cum camp director.
An Oscar nominee for Good Will Hunting and an Emmy nominee for FX’s The Riches, Driver became something of a household name in her hilarious role as Karen Walker’s (Megan Mullalley) step-daughter, nemesis and the other woman Lorraine Finster on Will and Grace.
Stage Fright is directed by Jerome Sable, who also wrote the script and composed the music. Lyrics are by Eli Batalion. Shooting begins Sept. 6.
