Beloved comedian and daytime television mainstay Ellen DeGeneres will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
DeGeneres' iconic
coming out 15 years ago on an episode on her sitcom Ellen paved the way for openly LGBT characters and actors on television. In a recent Hollywood Reporter cover story on DeGeneres, daytime talk icon Oprah Winfrey reflected on the importance of DeGeneres's coming out.
"Being able to be free -- literally -- and to express herself in a way that she can be 100 percent truthful with the audience has allowed them to fall in love with her…Honest-to-God truth: I don't believe she would have been as successful as she has become had she not come out," Winfrey said.
The star comes as DeGeneres prepares for the tenth season of her Emmy-winning talk show, returning September 10.
