Coming out can be scary. But as Chely Wright knew her entire career, coming out in the world of country music is downright terrifying. Two years ago, Wright made history when she became the first commercial country music star to announce that she is gay. Since then, she has been an active LGBT rights advocate and even tied the knot in 2011.
In her documentary, Wish Me Away, Wright chronicles the years she spent in the closet, praying for God to make her not gay anymore. She tearfully describes the moment she almost took her life and the heart-wrenching process of being completely honest with her family and fans. The film will be available on DVD starting next week, but this Thursday, October 11, Equality California (EQCA) will host a special screening at Ray Kurtzman Theater at CAA, with the film's directors and Wright herself in attendance.
There will be a pre-screening reception and a Q&A to follow. Click here for ticketing info. And be on the lookout for SheWired’s exclusive interview with ChelyWright this Wednesday.
