Diane Keaton Adapting 'Last Tango in Halifax' for HBO

Diane Keaton plans to remake the popular, lesbian-inclusive BBC series Last Tango in Halifax for American TV.

Keaton has acquired the rights to make a U.S. version of the show for HBO, London’s Guardian reports. The series has been one of the BBC’s most-watched programs, and its first season just finished airing stateside on PBS. The producers have filmed a second season, and a third is planned.

The show focuses on the romance of a man and woman, both in their 70s, former childhood sweethearts who have been reunited after both were widowed. The woman has a daughter who is beginning a same-sex relationship after the breakup of her marriage to a man. The lesbian love affair was a key subplot in the series’ first season, and it appears that it will continue to feature prominently.

Few details were available on the planned U.S. adaptation, according to the Guardian, which reports that it’s unclear whether Keaton will appear in the show.
