The Artists of Lilith Fair Series: Colbie Caillat Exclusive

Gay-friendly platinum recording artist Colbie Caillat has dipped her feet into a pool of gold with her break-out debut album "CoCo" and follow-up album "Breakthrough." The self-professed “happy girl” from California channeled her inner Bob Marley to create the hip sounds permeating throughout “Bubbly”, “Realize” and “Little Things”.  Her “Lucky” duet with Jason Mraz was exactly that for her burgeoning career and her feelings about Prop 8 and gay marriage.

Lilith Fair 2010 artist Colbie Caillat was born in Newbury Park, California on May 28, 1985.  Daughter to music producer Ken Caillat (Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Tusk), Colbie was no stranger to the music industry when she joined the MySpace community in 2006 and began promoting her then-unreleased songs to the world.  Record label Universal Republic signed Colbie to a record contract and then put her on the road touring throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Recently, I spoke with Colbie Caillat regarding California’s Proposition 8, the President of the United States, her top-selling albums and Lilith Fair 2010.

SheWired: Hi Colbie! You are one busy lady out there on tour!Where in the world are you right now?

Colbie Caillat: Right this very second, I am in the middle of my college tour and loving it! The fans are great and they know every word to all of my songs.Last night we played the Blue Ocean Music Hall in Massachusetts and today we are in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.Tomorrow we will be playing at SUNY.

Are there three items you can’t leave home without when you go out on the road?

My camera, my laptop and my water color paint set!

So many amazing things have happened to you since your break-out hit song, “Bubbly."  Tell us one of your favorites!

Wow, there are so many things!Well...I got to meet the President of the United States which is pretty amazing!  There was an incredible show in Berlin, Germany on the 4th of July and the stage we played on was floating on water in the middle of a lake.  It was a festival show in the day time and the audience was watching us play while they were swimming in the water.  It was so cool! Also, touring with John Mayer, writing with Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, Kara Dioguardi, recording a song with The Wailers and winning a Grammy Award!

How have you been affected by Proposition 8 in your state of California?  Do you agree or disagree?

I think that it is a shame not to acknowledge the love two people share who want to spend the rest of their lives together.  They should be granted all the rights that married couples have.

You will be playing at Lilith Fair 2010 this summer.  How did the coveted invitation make you feel?

It is exciting to be part of a great day of music, but even more gratifying is to have my music acknowledged and included in a historical event. It’s been several years since there has been a Lilith Fair and this is history in the making. I was lucky enough to have been able to see the last Lilith tour when I was younger.I also really appreciate that the sale of tickets benefits women’s causes in every market, and that they are both local and national charities.

What are you looking forward to most regarding your involvement with Lilith Fair?

There are so many women whose music I admire on the tour (from Erykah Badu to The Weepies).I can’t wait to see them!I also can’t wait to be part of a festival that acknowledges the music created by female artists.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Lauren Hill, Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac and John Mayer are my biggest influences! I think you can hear a little bit of all of them in my music.

You worked on Taylor Swift’s album Fearless. Obviously, it was a huge success!  Tell us about that experience.

Taylor [Swift] is one of the most driven and talented people I have ever met. We had a lot of fun together in the studio the day that we recorded "Breathe" in Nashville.  She deserves every award and accolade she gets!

What are some of your hopes for the rest of 2010?

I've already started writing for my third album in between tours and I'll be recording this summer.  I hope to keep traveling the world and learning new things everyday!
