Cybill Shepherd Receives GLAAD's Golden Gate Award: Video

GLAAD's media team released official video of Cybill Shepherd receiving the Golden Gate Award at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in San Francisco on June 5, 2010. The Golden Gate Award is presented to individuals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community in the media.  Presenting the Golden Gate award to the former Moonlighting and The L Word actress were Shepherd's two daughters - Clementine Ford and Ariel Shepherd-Oppenheim.

Sleek and stylish Shepherd was accompanied to the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards by her daughters and their partners (Ford walked hand-in-hand with famed songstress Linda Perry while Shepherd-Oppenheim cuddled alongside her date Carmen Chambers).  The ladies joined together on the red carpet to pose and answer questions related to gay rights, LGBT presence in the media and "don't ask, don't tell."

Curve Magazine's Lisa Gunther and I chatted with Shepherd on the red carpet about the Golden Gate Award.  Shepherd took a brief moment before letting us in on what the award meant to her personally. "Having witnessed the segregated south, and the inhuman treatment of blacks where I grew up, and being in Memphis when Martin Luther King was assassinated-that was the moment that I [knew I] had to become a political activist. And once you look at equality, you can't draw any line based on sexual orientation, or religion. We just want our children to grow up and flower. The world needs all its flowers."

During her acceptance speech on the stage that evening, Shepherd further explained, "We stand on the shoulders of our elders and I want to thank everyone who's worked so hard to make this possible.  I'm very humbled and I don't know that I could be more dedicated to this cause, but I could never thank you enough, GLAAD, for your education
