This week’s Glee brought the New Directions kids to the Big Apple for their shot at Nationals, and while Santana sang and danced her way through Lincoln Center, Times Square, Central Park and beyond, her lesbian storyline ended with a whimper for the season.

Just a few months ago Glee’s producers/writers had Santana (Naya Rivera) tearfully confessing her love for her BFF Brittany (Heather Morris) via a stirring rendition of Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide.”  A wonderfully Sapphic moment indeed! Earlier this month, an admittedly deeply closeted Santana, turned up the volume and delivered a coming out tease sporting a shirt that read “Lebanese,” a typo courtesy of Brittany. But that was about as far as things got.

During the show’s much-hyped prom episode Santana attended prom with her big gay beard Karofsky, only to land in the bathroom melting down over being passed over for prom queen. But, as usual, Brit was there to pick up Santana’s pieces and to bolster McKinley High’s resident lesbian character.

Fast Forward to the season finale entitled “New York” and the story is pretty much all about Rachel and Ross – I mean – Rachel (Lea Michelle) and Finn, who will be navigating the ups and downs of their relationship for as long as Glee’s quirks continue to charm its audience.

So, with much of the 43 minutes of actual running time devoted to the show’s central love story there was little time for much else, save for a wonderful musical bonding moment that has show queens Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Rachel on the set of Wicked belting the ballad “For Good,” which incidentally, Kristin Chenoweth sang to Oprah this week for her farewell.

But back to Glee… Prior to a final touching –- albeit open-ended -- moment for the season between Santana and Brit, there’s just one little lesbian reference that arrives courtesy of a grieving – for her sad love life — Quinn (Dianna Agron).

Pretty-girl Quinn’s been having a rough time of things since she was passed over for prom queen and dumped by Finn. In a tearful moment prior to their Nationals’ performance she confesses she’s jealous of all of the Glee Club members who’ve found love including Rachel, Tina and Lauren Zizes.

Taking a seat on the edge of the bed with Quinn sandwiched between Santana and Brit, Quinn says tearfully, “I just need somebody to love me.”

“I think I know how to make you feel better,” says an uncharacteristically sincere Santana.

“I’m flattered Santana but I’m really not that into that,” Quinn says non-judgmentally. And what’s interesting is the emphasis on “that,” almost implying that she’d be somewhat into it depending on the day, weather, position of the moon, barometric pressure – whatever.

“No, I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about a haircut,” Santana says, while Brittany tousles Quinn’s hair. Aw… There’s nothing like girl time between girls.

The Satyrs Motorcycle Club

Back at McKinley High, after Rachel and Finn’s awkward -– for everyone but them-- on-stage Nationals’ kiss blows the New Directions’ shot at a win despite delivering some kick-ass vocals, Santana and Brit are at the lockers… And what’s the rule of teen drama? Everything of importance unfolds at the lockers!

Brit asks Santana if she’s still pissed about Rachel and Finn essentially costing Glee Club a shot at placing. Santana’s got a freshly fueled vendetta against Rachel — replete with a Rachel voodoo doll. But Brittany is much more forgiving.

“This year wasn’t about winning for me,” Brit says.

“Clearly, because we got our asses kicked,” Santana says, true to form. “Sorry. What was it about?” she asks in an attempt to show she’s working on becoming a better listener.

“Acceptance. I know that all the kids in the Glee Club — they fight and they steal each others’ boyfriends and girlfriends, and they threaten to quit like every other week but weird stuff like that happens in families,” Brit says.

“Well, this is a club. This is not a family,” says Santana, and she must know she’s being cynical for cynical's sake at this point.

“Family is a place where everybody loves you no matter what and they accept you for who you are,” Brit says, adding that she loves her Glee Club colleagues. “I love them. I love everyone in Glee Club and I get to spend another year with everyone I love, so I’m good.”

“What about you and I,” Santana asks.

“I love you Santana. I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone else in this world. All I know about you and I is because of that I think anything is possible.” Brit says to collective “awwws” from couches throughout the nation.

“You’re my best friend,” Santana says, hugging Brit.

“Yeah, me too,” Brit replies, causing Santana to heavy sigh and tear up a bit.

As they pull away Santana asks, “When did you get so smart?” And that just may be the indication that there may be a future for “Brittana” since it’s the first time Santana’s acknowledged that what Brit has going on is actually a kind of dim-witted brilliance that’s nothing close to stupidity or naiveté.

And that’s that for the couple that’s got untold numbers of devoted fans rooting for them. As Naya Rivera told the LA Times just this week, “Who knows if the writers would have taken that relationship so seriously if there hadn't been such an outpouring for them to get together.”

So there you have it ladies. Sometimes the tail does wag the dog and maybe come September we’ll get to see the Santana-Brittany relationship play out. Yeesh! September is a long time to wait. Thank the teen drama gods that Pretty Little Liars will be back in June!
