Fox’s hit musical show Glee is in the middle of it’s summer concert tour, but work on Season 3 began Monday with six new writers joining the staff, including a lesbian and writer, Allison Adler.

Adler, Marti Noxon, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Michael Hitchcock, Matt Hodgson and Ross Maxwell are the new additions joining executive producers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan in the writers’ room, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Glee has kept a small writing staff despite the intricacies involved in weaving musical numbers into the show’s narrative and the show’s ratings success, and until now, Murphy, Falchuk and Brennan have been the core creative group.

In May, Murphy told THR that Season 3 will focus on freshman characters, and that he plans to include more serialized stories.

“Last year you had the baby story line that everyone could follow and this year we didn’t do that,” Murphy told THR. “Next year we’re going to be doing that more. What I have learned from this season is I think people want story arcs.”

Adler, whose credits include No Ordinary Family and Chuck, will serve as co-executive producer. As an out lesbian (she and partner Sara Gilbert have been together since 2002) with 20 years of industry experience, Adler was honored as one of Power Up’s Amazing Gay Women in Entertainment for 2010.

Noxon, who worked on Josh Wedon’s Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men, and Shonda Rhimes’ hits Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy, will be a consulting producer for Glee.

Former MadTV writer and actor Hitchcock will also be a consulting producer. Hitchcock’s credits include two episodes of Glee, several Christopher Guest features and 11 episodes from United States of Tara’s final season.

Playwright and comic book writer, whose credits include HBO’s Big Love and Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Aguirre-Sacasa will be a co-producer.

Hodgson, who is already a Glee script coordinator and worked with Murphy on Eat, Pray, Love, will be a staff writer along with Running in Traffic actor Maxwell.

Glee Season 3 begins filming in August, and Glee Live! 3D! hits theaters August 12.
