Jett has never quite officially come out as a lesbian to the press, but she's often promoted as an "out lesbian" when appearing at events like Dinah Shore. Jett was even briefly romantically linked to
model & actress Carmen Electra, but in general prefers to keep her private life just that - private.
Following Joan Jett on Elle's list is former band mate Lita Ford, who moved on from The Runaways to knock out her own solo career. Coming in number seven on the list, out lesbian Carrie Brownstein of
Sleater-Kinney, which sadly went on indefinite hiatus several years back.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart is signed on to play the young Joan Jett in an upcoming biopic. That's a mighty hefty load to set on anyone's shoulders and we can only hope Stewart can do the legendary
Runaways front woman justice.
