Rachel Maddow at the Top of 'The Nation's' 'Media Heroes' List

Rachel Maddow has won the top spot in a poll to select “30 Media Heroes,” conducted by the progressive magazine The Nation. The list of heroes, from a poll The Nation conceived as a response to Salon’s “Hack Thirty” list of the worst columnists and commentators, reads like a who’s who of liberal pundits, including Keith Olbermann, Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert, Bill Moyers, Arianna Huffington, Bill Maher, and Frank Rich.

The out Maddow, who hosts an eponymous talk show on MSNBC, led throughout the voting and claimed first place easily, Nation blogger Greg Mitchell reported Monday. More than 1,200 readers voted, via online comments, e-mail, and Twitter.

Maddow is also featured in The Advocate’s top stories of 2010for her coverage of the “kill the gays” bill pending in Uganda and its connection to U.S. religious conservatives. Her show has explored many other LGBT issues as well, including the fight to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
