SheWired's Afternoon Web Crawl for Oct. 26

Here's a smattering of pop culture from around the web! Today's tidbits include: Kristen Stewart, Cynthia Nixon on Joy Behar, Facebook joining 'It Gets Better,' Rock Band 3, Barnes and Noble Nook, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Mulligan, and some big lesbian True Blood news!

With so much information coming at us on the Internet it's tough to keep up with all of the mostly meaningless but guilty pleasure type of info out there – and some of it is meaningful. Either way, here's a smattering of pop culture from around the web!

Kristen Stewart's flick Welcome to the Rileys hits theaters this Friday. Stewart is excited because this role is different from the ones she usually plays. She told E! News "I've always played girls who have had everything that they need, and this was the first time I played a survivor," describing her character Mallory. "She definitely has the capacity to not be alone, to trust people, and let people in. That's good for any girl—that basic idea that you have to like yourself to have other people like you or love you. It's a big problem for girls, just innately. It's good for that, really good for that." And since James Woods has recently hailed Kristen as the next DeNiro or Marlon Brando -- it's telling that he chose uber-masculine actors-- we're hoping Kristen becomes Oscar bait with the new role!

The ever-watchable Cynthia Nixon, who’s engaged to Christine Marinoni in their home state of New York, appears on tonight’s The Joy Behar Show to chat about her initiative Fight Back New York and how homophobic dimwits with a platform, like Carl Paladino, indeed lend to an environment of hate. Joy is one of the LGBT community’s staunchest and devoted straight allies and she’s not afraid to call somebody out for homophobic rhetoric. I think Joy discusses LGBT issues more than we do and we’re a lesbian / gay issues oriented site!

Cynthia is super-smart and well spoken as usual in the clip, and well, I could just watch and listen to her talk for hours. Here’s a clip from tonight’s show.

A group of Facebook employees have joined the 'It Gets Better' campaign. It still doesn't explain Facebook's seemingly random censorship policy, like shutting down the Queer Kiss-in page for the Pope's visit but kudos to the LGBT employees. Here is the video they released today:

In technology news… Rock Band 3 is out today! And let me just say my friends who get this should never invite me over, give me a couple of glasses of Rioja and let me start singing along. They will never wrench the microphone out of my hands. Highlights from the set list include Amy Winehouse ‘Rehab,’ The B52’s “Rock Lobster,” Blondie “Heart of Glass,” Joan Jett “I Love Rock n Roll,” The Cure “Just Like Heaven,” Echo and the Bunnymen “The Killing Moon,” The Smiths “Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and Tegan and Sara “The Con.”

For those who prefer a quieter pastime, Barnes and Noble has launched its latest edition of the Nook e-Reader, featuring a color touch screen and Web browsing. The whole e-book thing eludes me. Wasn’t part of the fun of reading Middlemarch in a coffee shop so that the cute barista would chat you up about Victorian literature?

If you’ve in the market for a 1.5 million dollar mini manse near Nashville, the original Idol Kelly Clarkson is selling her digs. According to Gawker, Kelly’s leaving the country music capital and selling her home that boasts five bedrooms and six baths. I just like to envision Kelly sitting in that country room with the wooden beams, sipping Wild Turkey and belting out old Loretta Lynn tunes.

On the flip side of Kelly’s rather indulgent house for any single girl, An Education breakout star and now Hollywood ‘it’ girl Carey Mulligan is hunkering down in the Best Western on Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood, just below the Bowl. Proving she’s no Lindsay Lohan / Chateau Marmont style spoiled diva, Carey moved into the Best Western following her break-up with Shia LeBeouf, and she cites Best Western’s sweet potato fries as a plus to staying there. Hmmm. Maybe its time to grab a tattered copy of Middlemarch and ordered up a serving of sweet potato fries in the lobby of the BW.

The gayest show on television continues to add queer characters. That’s right. AfterEllen is reporting that True Blood has announced new characters for its fourth season, and the list includes Naomi, an “Asian-American cage fighter who, when she’s not fighting, gets ‘hot-’n’-heavy’ with one of her female competitors.”

Naomi marks the fifth lesbian-inclined character on the show, including Evan Rachel Wood’s vampire queen and her plaything, played by Lindsay Haun. The bisexual badass Vampire Pam (Kristen Bauer) and Nan, the Vampire League’s spokesvamp (Jessica Tuck).

While this is great news I’m still holding my breath for a Sookie and Tara hook-up – even if it’s in flashback.
