TLC's New Series 'Sister Wives' Gets Interesting

Well, life is certainly interesting. There are still 1,138 federal rights denied to most of us within the United States of America because we, as lesbian and gay citizens, are not allowed to commit to our partners in marriage, but polygamy in Utah is completely acceptable. This is according to the new TLC show Sister Wives.

Whether or not you agree with polygamy in America or in any other part of the world, it is definitely hard to look away when it’s staring right back at you on television in a very, well, almost “normal” way. Strange? I know…I’m confused, too.

Without further ado, here are the introductions.

The Marriages:

Kody Brown: Husband to Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn.

Meri (First Wife): 39-years-old, married 20 years to Kody.
Janelle (Second Wife): 40-years-old, married 17 years to Kody.

Christine (Third Wife): 37-years-old, married 16 years to Kody.

Robyn: 31 years old, soon-to-be Kody’s fourth wife.

The Children:

Kody and Meri produced one daughter – Mariah, 14.

Kody and Janelle produced six children – Logan, 15, Madison 14, Hunter, 13, Garrison, 11, Gabriel, 8, and Savanah, 5.

Kody and Christine produced five children – Aspyn, 14, Mykelti, 13, Paedon, 11, Gwenelyn, 8, Ysabel, 6 – and one on the way, Truely.

Kody and Robyn have not yet produced any children. Robyn is Kody’s soon-to-be fourth wife. She has three children from a previous marriage - Dayton, 10, Aurora, 7, and Breanna, 5.

Wow. That was a mouthful. Are you following? Okay, good. I think I am following, too.

So, let’s get back to how this practice of polygamy is “acceptable” and gay marriage is not, shall we? Oh, wait…can’t seem to come up with anything? I agree.

It’s preposterous that we as Americans are drawn to families on television with multiple children by multiple wives and husbands but cannot seem to grasp the very simple concept that two people in a committed, adult relationship want only to be with one another in a marriage full of love and very palpable sacrifice. Yet, it is seemingly all right when compared to America’s viewing habits to showcase a very mixed-bag family such as Kody’s mentioned above.

The seven-part mini-series premiered on TLC this past Sunday at 10 p.m. ET.
