Hollywood's economic crunch has taken another victim: TNT drama Saving Grace.
The drama, staring two-time Emmy nominee Holly Hunter — who locked lips with actress Clea Duvall (Girl, Interrupted, But I'm a Cheerleader, The Laramie Project) in the drama's Looks Like a Lesbian Attack to Me episode last week — was considered too expensive to continue production.
The drama, which concludes its third season Tuesday, revolves around an Oklahoma City police detective (Hunter) who is offered a chance to redeem her career by an angel and also stars Laura San Giacomo (Pretty Woman).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox TV Studios, the studio that produces the show, wanted a full fourth season, but TNT opted to cancel the series altogether.
TNT has ordered three more episodes of the drama for a total of nine episodes to run next summer. The series, which averages more than 3.5 million viewers, will resolve the inter-woven story lines, the cable network said.
Saving Grace becomes the second cable series canceled in recent days, joining Comedy Central's Reno! 911, which wrapped its six-season run July 8.
The police mocumentary parody series, which stars Niecy Nash, co-creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon in a loosely plotted comedy that is mostly improvised, announced its end in a Tweet last week from Lennon, who plays master of the short shorts Lt. Jim Dangle: "Reno 911! was canceled at 1:30 pm today. Won't be wearing the shorts again."
