An anonymous Twitter user claiming to be an English soccer player is stirring up interest by claiming he will be coming out soon.

“The Gay Footballer” has been tweeting since July 5, initially announcing that he is a proud gay man playing for a football club in England and just came out to his family.

Follow up tweets said that he had come out to his manager and was seeking advice on how to come out publicly, something he says he plans to do at some undefined date prior to the start of the next season.

The account has slowly gained attention from all over the world, as people are curious as to whether this is a hoax or if a footballer is actually about to come out.

If this is real, this mystery man will supposedly be the first male soccer player in England to be out while playing professionally since Justin Fashanu back in 1990.

And if it’s a hoax? Well, it’s certainly gotten people riled up. “The Gay Footballer” has even gone so far as to offer future interviews to young kids who want to be sports reporters, and has interacted with a number of folks who are dealing with homophobia in their own lives.

“I have heard from numerous people who have stated that their sexuality stopped them from being involved in football, as they didn’t believe the two could co-exist,” he wrote.

“I don’t want anybody in the future to feel that way, and with the work being done throughout the sport, I hope this can be the catalyst for change.”
