François Arnaud Comes Out as Bisexual to Combat Stigma
He says he has always considered himself bisexual.
François Arnaud has come out as bisexual in an important Instagram post ahead of Bisexuality Day this coming week.
Our culture still struggles with understanding and acknowledging bisexuality, which is why we still have things like Bisexuality Visibility Week, and why some people with large platforms take it upon themselves to talk about the importance of realizing someone’s sexuality isn’t tied directly to who they may be dating at that moment.
In a series of text posts shared to his Insta Stories, Arnaud, who is most well-known for starring in The Borgias but who had a memorable guest starring role as David’s ex, Sebastien Raine, in an episode of Schitt’s Creek, spoke to exactly this.
“Last week, I was chatting with work friends, and as I bought up a trip I’d taken with an ex-girlfriend, I asked myself — for the ten-thousandth time — how to tell such a story without making it seem like that was the whole story of me,” he wrote.
“I’m sure many bisexual guys feel the same and end up doing as I did: letting other people’s assumptions of straightness stand uncorrected."
Arnaud went on to discuss the reasons it sometimes may feel easier to do this, including that it’s “really fucking scary to give up your privilege.”
“But here’s the thing. Silence has the perverse effect of perpetuating those stereotypes, making bi guys invisible, and leading people to doubt that we even exist. No wonder it’s still a chore to acknowledge bisexuality without getting into lengthy explanations," he said.
“So yes, labels are frustrating and words, imperfect. But I’ve always considered myself bisexual. Not confused or trying to look edgy. Not disloyal. Not ashamed," he added. “Not invisible.”
