Gus Kenworthy may not have won an Olympic gold medal, but now he has a gold ring!
The four-time Olympic skier popped the question to fashion executive Andrew Rigby while vacationing off the coast of Mallorca.
Kenworthy announced his engagement on August 5 on Instagram with photos of the proposal and the caption, “He said he’d think about it!”
The 34-year-old Olympic silver medalist, who made history in 2018 alongside Adam Rippon as the first two out gay American men to compete at the Winter Olympics, opened up about getting down on one knee in an exclusive interview with People.
“We took a private dinghy from the pier at the St. Regis where we were having a cocktail by the beach at the Mar Sea Club,” Kenworthy said. “I told Andrew I was taking him on a little adventure. Once we got to the island we climbed off the dinghy and hiked up to the top of the cliffs.”
Kenworthy thought of everything, including having his boyfriend's favorite cocktail waiting for them.
“I organized for a picnic blanket to be waiting for us with a pitcher of margaritas — extra sweet because that’s how Andrew orders them,” he continued. “After the proposal, we got back on the dinghy — but instead of going back to the mainland, it took us out to a chartered boat.”
After their intimate moment, they were joined by close friends who celebrated their proposal with them.
“Six of our friends were hiding on it, waiting to surprise Andrew and celebrate with us,” he said.
Kenworthy’s engagement comes two years after spending time with Rigby at a mutual friend's birthday party in March 2024 in Mexico, which led to them dating.
The pair dated long distance between Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia for a year before they both relocated to New York last year. Kenworthy made their relationship Instagram official in August 2024 and since then, he has been sharing glimpses into their love story with his fans on social media.
Rigby also shared that he was caught completely off guard when Kenworthy got down on one knee.
“We’ve talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation,” he told People. “To say I was shocked was an understatement. And then to see our friends there immediately after Gus proposed? Wow.”
The couple now has Cartier rings — gold for Kenworthy and platinum for Rigby — after traveling to attend to two of the biggest Pride events in the world.
“We just went to Berlin Pride to celebrate a friend’s 40th and then went to Amsterdam for World Pride,” Kenwrothy said. “We had already made the plan to go to Mallorca at the end of our trip as a little decompression and it felt like the perfect opportunity for the proposal.”
