After becoming a standout contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season one, Blu Hydrangea came back to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs the World and went on to win the show. However, many viewers may not realize just how much money Hydrangea spent in order to prepare for her comeback season.

In a newly-shared video, Hydrangea detailed how many new wigs and new outfits she had to get for UK vs the World so that she was ready for all of the maxi challenges and runways. By the end of the video, Hydrangea revealed that she purchased 15 new outfits and 12 new wigs for UK vs the World, which cost her a total of £22,500 (about $26,050 in US dollars).

With that said, Hydrangea didn’t regret spending that much to prepare for the show, even if there was no prize money for winning UK vs the World.

“I didn’t go broke, I didn’t take out a loan. I was happy to spend the money. You know what… any chance to buy new drag, I’m there,” Hydrangea explained in the video. “You don’t need to worry that there was no prize money, I am surviving and thriving out here, babes. You don’t need to go broke doing Drag Race. If you have smart concepts and throw your personality into it, that’s all that matters.”

The Drag Race UK vs the World winner also noted that she was actually one of the contestants who spent the least amount of money for that season, which means that other queens might’ve invested even more money in preparation.

Over the years, this high pre-season spending has become a daunting reality for potential Drag Race contestants. Generally speaking, up-and-coming drag artists don’t usually have tens of thousands of dollars sitting around just waiting to be spent for a reality competition series. There is also the frightening thought that they might go home early in the season, which means that they wouldn’t even show all of the drag that they got to go on the show.

Nonetheless, Hydrangea made it clear that she did have this much money to spend and was happy to do it, so her situation was a bit different. We stan our UK vs the World winner!

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season four airs Thursday on WOW Presents Plus.
