Gay Penguin Book for Children Most 'Contentious' Says American Library Assoc.

And Tango Makes Three, the children's book that depicts the true story of two male penguins raising a baby chick, is the most contentious children's title in the nation, according to the American Library Association list of the 10 most frequently challenged books.

The 2005 book by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell tells the story Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins that temporarily operated as a couple and helped raise a baby penguin at New York's Central Park Zoo. And Tango Makes Three topped the ALA's list of challenged books in 2007, 2008, and 2009. A challenged book is defined as a "formal, written complaint filed with a library or school requesting that a book or other material be restricted or removed because of its content or appropriateness."
