In a statement to the press, GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said,"We urge the full Senate to join their counterparts in the House in approving this amendment and urge swift action in moving to repeal this unjust law. Today's historic votes follow years of gay and lesbian service members who served our country proudly and courageously shared their personal stories after being unfairly dismissed. It was the stories of these brave service members and work by numerous advocacy organizations that shifted public opinion to support a repeal and ultimately lead to today's votes."

A survey released by CNN on Tuesday indicated that the public now supports the allowance of openly gay men and women to serve in the military by 78 percent.

President Obama made a statement to the press regarding this shift in consciousness and direction for inclusiveness in the House. "I am pleased that both the House of Representatives and the Senate Armed Services Committee took important bipartisan steps toward repeal tonight. This legislation will help make our Armed Forces even stronger and more inclusive by allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to serve honestly and with integrity."
