The Mexican Supreme Court has upheld a law legalizing same-sex marriage in Mexico City.
The court found the law to be constitutional, rejecting an appeal by federal prosecutors who argued that it violated the charter's guarantees to protect the family.
The justices have not yet outlines their 8-2 ruling and said they still need to determine the law’s impact on state outside the capitol city. The court still has to rule on the constitutionality of a law allowing adoption by gay couples in Mexico City.
In their decision, justices stressed that while the constitution provides for the protection of families, it does not define what makes a family.
