First, name a professional sports team owner. If you were like me you probably chose your city’s NFL or MLB team…which is a guy and boring as well as passé.

I’ll give you props if you named an NHL owner, and you get a big kiss on the lips if you named a WNBA owner.

Now…think of a woman owner of a professional sports team, that didn’t inherit it. Hard isn’t it? Here are two: Kathy Goodman and Carla Christofferson, co-owners of the L.A. Sparks.

Dig deeper and try to think of a woman owner of a male team. BET co-founder, Sheila Johnson is getting there. She’s co-owner of the Washington Mystics, plus now has an interest in the NBA Washington Wizards and the NHL Washington Capitals.

Linda Alvarado makes the list as part owner of the Colorado Rockies. Honestly though, I’d never heard of these women before this article. The women are few and far between, unless you think about Marge Schott, and nobody wants to think about her…

There’s hope on the horizon, though, and two big names to add to the list. Tennis superstars Serena and Venus Williams are in final negotiations to become co-owners of the Miami Dolphins. Now there are a couple of names even the most sports-deficient lesbian can remember! As high-profile women athletes, they will broaden the idea of what women can do in the sports world. Owners dictate the fate of their sports' team and with more women speaking, more of the general public will have to listen. And I want to hear what they have to say. Get more women owners; highlight women in sports--all sports--even when just the guys are on the field.

Now, ladies. Name two professional sports team owners. I knew you could do it!

A quick update: Thanks go to LezGetReal for information that Caster Semenya’s hormone tests have been leaked. Her tests show that she had almost three times the normal testosterone usually found in a woman. Hormone levels vary over time and Semenya will have to undergo further hormone testing with this as a baseline. Even if her testosterone level is three times the normal value for a woman, that will still put her below the normal for a man…looks like more questions than answers for now.
