Stepping it Up: The New Lesbian Footwear!

Stepping it Up: The New Lesbian Footwear!

Lesbians have come a long way from the Birkenstock / Croc footgear stereotype. Jenn Kennedy weighs in on the hottest shoes out there...'Footwear is something I can always seem to justify buying. There are beach days (flip-flops), black tie events (heels), shooting days (converse sneakers), client meetings (loafers) and girls' night out (boots). Living in Southern California, I have 30 variations in the category of sandal alone.'

Technically, fall is rapidly approaching, however the record high temperatures here in Los Angeles make it hard to really get my head around that fact. I recently received a barrage of sale emails from Zappos, Nordstrom, Banana Republic and others. Everyone is bundled in suede and scarves and look as though they are from another planet as I sit here sweating in my hot pants and flip-flops. But weather seems to change overnight, and soon enough we'll all be pulling on those Uggs and donning a cap to stave off the chill.

Footwear is something I can always seem to justify buying. There are beach days (flip-flops), black tie events (heels), shooting days (converse sneakers), client meetings (loafers) and girls' night out (boots). Living in Southern California, I have 30 variations in the category of sandal alone.

Heading into this story I posted the question to my friends on Facebook: What is your favorite pair of shoes and why? I received dozens of lively replies from all walks of life. Here are some of my favorites:

"My tennis shoes! When I put them on I feel inspired to work hard on myself in the gym or exercise outdoors. They are definitely esteem-builders for me." Lisa Odynski -Anderson

"I like peep-toe shoes. I have been told toe cleavage is sexy." Angela Milligan

"Black mary janes.  They can be sexy, churchy, worn with jeans, professional.  They are versatile, comfortable and timeless.  And if your toes look bad, nobody can see them!" Christy Polichio Mack

"Classic black knee-high boots with a heel (Charles David brand) 'cause they make me feel sassy!" Leslie Thompson

"I have a modern spin on the classic wing tip...but designed for the ladies. They're handcrafted in Italy with a 1/2" heel and smartly crafted to be worn as a slip-on. They are equally as cool looking when dressed up or down." Lisa Botts

"Flip flops. My feet have claustrophobia! My favorite pair is from Teva, not the dykey hiking ones, these totally comfy and cute." Courtney Andrews

"Black sequin satin mary jane heels. A little bit naughty for a night on the town." Jennifer St. Clair

"Strappy heels, because they make us look taller and our legs look longer and more fit than might actually be!" Laurie Kaman

"Comfort is everything. I love Borns for this reason but they're not for the femme at heart." Elisa Garcia

"Black harness motorcycle boots. (Frye is one of my favorites). They last forever, have swagger, and suggest just enough naughtiness-but most of all they are rugged and great for long rides." Neal Boulton

Shoes say so much: heel or flat, sparkle or scuff, canvas or leather.  And the best part is you can live different roles on different days, depending on your mood. Here are a few finds I've selected for the season.

Converse, Nike and Vans let you design your own sneaker. But beware - limit the amount of colors you use or you may end up with clown shoes, as I did. Here are some specialty Converse by John Varvatos, called the Loose Fit Slip. They run $125.

Banana Republic offers an array of stylish flats - perfect for skinny jeans or sundresses. They run in sizes from 5-11 and cost $98.

Piperlime has a range of sexy suede boots this season. I've always been a fan of the high boots -- so slimming and commanding -- but the new trend in shorties are a must have too. They carry various brands and range in price from $80-$400.

Browsing around, I was taunted by the promise of Rachel Zoe's pick. Sure enough, they are spectacular. Called Cheap and Chic by Moschino, they are anything but. If you're looking to splurge on something sexy and futuristic, try these.

And we can't forget the east coasters who love their loafers. They are comfortable and stylish for long days at the office, which turn into dinners out with friends. These suede Franco Sarto pair are called Ivy and run $80.

So start moving the summer guard to the back of the closet and pulling forward the fall cheer. Maybe step out of your comfort zone and buy a new pair of shoes that just make you feel good. Quality shoes will last forever and add the finishing touch to any outfit. We'd also like you to weigh in on your favorite shoes. Tell me what they are and why you love them!
