On Tuesday, the D.C. Council voted favorably for legislation to recognize same-sex marriages preformed in other states as legal marriages in the District. This bring D.C. even closer to legalizing gay marriage in the city.

"This is the march towards human rights and equality," Council member David A. Catania explained. "It is not the march toward special rights...and that march is coming here."

The Council vote count was 12-0, in favor of amending a bill Phil Mendelson introduced. Also approved by members was a separate legislation that recognizes relationships similar to domestic partnerships for the District which have all  "the rights and responsibilities of marriage" in other jurisdictions.

According to an article from The Washington Times, another provision in the legislation allows the mayor to certify relationships that fall short of marriage as domestic partnerships in the District.
